Food, trade & the household budget

Global food prices rise again

A 1.5% monthly increase puts food costs back in focus, as grain prices climb and shipping disruption adds pressure.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s food-price index reached 136.0 in September, up 1.5% from August and 5.8% from a year earlier. Cereals rose 5.1%; sugar and vegetable oils also increased, while meat fell and dairy was broadly stable. Wheat prices rose especially sharply, with Black Sea logistics, weather and higher transport costs among the pressures.

This is an international commodity basket, not a forecast of your next Zürich supermarket receipt. Contracts, exchange rates, processing and retail competition influence the eventual effect. Nor does dearer food automatically mean a collapsed harvest: FAO still expects the second-largest global cereal crop on record. The concern is how disruption and costs reach importing countries and households with little room in their budgets. Reuters’ reporting.

Audi sets out the next chapter for Hinwil

1 October. Audi’s Formula 1 operation has announced a new campus on Zürichstrasse, less than a kilometre from its existing Hinwil factory. Some facilities have operated since summer; full completion is planned for 2030. Manufacturing and the wind tunnel remain at Wildbachstrasse, alongside the team’s German and British bases. For Zürich’s technical-workforce ecosystem, this is a substantial investment in how a growing team works together—not a published list of vacancies. Formula 1.

Munch and Lassnig meet at the Kunsthaus

Opens 2 October. Opening today, this exhibition brings roughly 150 works into a dialogue about the body, self-perception, life and mortality. Maria Lassnig’s inward-looking body awareness meets Edvard Munch’s expressive figures and emotional landscapes. It runs until 21 February 2027, giving you time for a proper visit rather than a rushed final weekend. Regular admission is CHF 31, including the collection; concessions apply. Kunsthaus Zürich.

Recovery belongs in the working day

1 October. Ahead of UZH’s Mental Health Awareness Week, psychologist Valentina Vylobkova discusses how people recover from demanding work. Psychological detachment matters, and what restores one person may not restore another; short breaks and genuinely absorbing leisure can both help. It is a useful interview for your learning-and-capability interests, rather than evidence for a single universal wellbeing programme. The university’s talks and workshops run from 5–9 October. Swiss glaciers lose more than 5% in one summer

1 October. The latest GLAMOS measurements, reported by SRF, put this summer’s ice-volume loss above 5%. Almost a fifth has disappeared in five years, and the loss since 2000 is about 43%. Meltwater can temporarily support rivers during dry spells, but the shrinking ice leaves less in reserve for future summers. These are measured changes; projections for the end of the century depend on future warming and should be read separately. SRF / GLAMOS findings.

Put the 2027 health-insurance comparison on your list

2 October. Swiss basic-insurance premiums are rising by an average of 5% for 2027, according to the official Priminfo announcement. A new Deloitte/YouGov survey suggests 600,000–900,000 people could switch insurer; that is an estimate of intentions, not completed moves. For your Zürich household, the useful action is to compare your own postcode, age, excess, accident cover and insurance model. The national average cannot tell you what your particular policy will cost. Federal Office of Public Health · Priminfo.

A new arrest in the Fairford investigation

1 October; updated 2 October. A 25-year-old British-Iranian man has been arrested in Westminster on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. Police corrected an earlier age of 27. Five men arrested near RAF Fairford on Sunday remain on bail; no explosive devices were found. The government suspects an Iranian connection, which Iran denies. The new arrest is a material development, but neither the suspected foreign link nor anyone’s criminal responsibility has been established in court. BBC News.

The pilot who opened the cockpit door

2 October. Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar has described being attacked by his co-pilot on Wednesday’s Dubai–Tel Aviv flight. His account says he opened the cockpit door after being wounded; passengers intervened and two reserve pilots helped land the aircraft at Tabuk. More than 170 passengers were aboard. The account explains the emergency response, but the motive and full sequence remain subjects for the investigation. BBC News.

Renewed fighting puts Ethiopia’s region on edge

2 October. Reuters examines renewed fighting involving Ethiopia and Tigray, and the risk that neighbouring states become more deeply involved. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting rebels; Eritrea denies the allegation. The alliances differ from those of the earlier Tigray war, while Sudan’s conflict and Gulf interests complicate diplomacy. The immediate story is renewed violence and regional anxiety; a wider war is a risk, not an established outcome. The Straits Times / Reuters.

Europe faces pressure over diesel reserves

2 October. European officials are discussing emergency diesel supplies as the US pressures allies to release stocks and threatens export restrictions. Higher fuel costs can spread through freight, farming and heating, linking this dispute to today’s food-price lead. The measures under discussion should not be confused with a ban already imposed. Any household effect depends on how the dispute develops and on the energy and transport costs you actually face. The Straits Times / AFP.

Richmond sketches a £39 million savings programme

30 September. Richmond Council is planning annual savings of £39 million by 2029, alongside a reported £29 million reduction in core funding. The proposals include service redesign, care and housing changes, and a more unified route into council support. For your home borough, the question is what residents experience as these plans take shape. Savings forecasts and proposed automation are not evidence that the service changes have already delivered. Metrocentre’s next owner is lined up

1 October. Landsec has agreed a £516 million acquisition of Metrocentre, bringing a major Tyneside retail destination into its portfolio. Completion remains conditional on a bond restructuring, expected the following week. That distinction matters: an agreed transaction is not yet a completed handover. Beyond the shopping-centre story, it is a regional business read about where investors see value in physical retail and the surrounding leisure economy. Chronicle Live.

California’s harvest through a grower’s eyes

1 October. Vinetur’s Spanish-language report draws on the Wine Institute’s early California harvest assessment, including Terah Bajjalieh’s experience across Lodi, Amador and the Central Coast. Small berries, retained acidity and tannin quality feature in growers’ accounts. These are early producer observations, not an independent verdict on finished wines. Read it for the decisions and conditions behind the vintage—and for a winemaker’s perspective beyond the usual British wine pages. Vinetur · Spanish.

Callie Louw starts another Swartland chapter

28 September · catch-up. Tim James visits Sonkop, where Callie Louw is building a new venture after leaving Porseleinberg. The story moves through land, planted and planned vineyards, water and the practical work of establishing a cellar. It is an unusually grounded profile: the interest is in the making of a farm and a long-term project, rather than a score attached to a bottle. This week’s South African catch-up is worth the detour. Damien Hirst meets Dom Pérignon

1 October. Dom Pérignon’s Kaleidoscope collaboration puts Damien Hirst’s visual language around Vintage 2018 and Rosé 2010. WineNews’s Italian report describes blue and pink editions that make the packaging part of the encounter. For your overlapping art and wine interests, the story is the presentation of a familiar luxury product through another artist’s vocabulary. The vintage dates refer to the wines, not to when this collaboration was announced. WineNews · Italian.

When the first recruiter is an algorithm

2 October. SRF examines the growing role of AI in recruitment, citing a Manpower survey in which 66% of Swiss companies reported using AI in HR. An applicant’s experience of unanswered submissions illustrates the frustration, but cannot establish why every rejection occurred. For your search, the practical lesson is to make relevant experience explicit and easy to locate: clear role language, evidence of outcomes and an honest match to the stated requirements. SRF.

Sanofi and Regeneron deepen their immunology partnership

1 October. Sanofi will pay Regeneron $1 billion upfront for a collaboration covering four long-acting immunology programmes, with up to $7 billion in additional milestone payments possible. The partners will share development costs and profits; the potential total is not money already earned. For your pharma background, the operational story is the coordination of research, commercial preparation and capability across two organisations while the products themselves still face development risk. AI-generated assessment still needs a designer

30 September. The Learning Guild sets out a workflow for using AI in assessment design: start with the objective and approved source material, select tools deliberately, review with subject experts, then pilot and refine. The article is practitioner guidance rather than a controlled demonstration of improved learning. Its useful challenge is to keep the assessment attached to a real decision or skill, so a fluent question does not pass as a valid test. The Learning Guild.

Manchester City’s financial case enters another phase

Your weekend, a design experiment and a different kind of puzzle

Three things to put in the diary

Action & deadlines. Today: registration closes for the Winterthur blind tasting on 9 October; tonight brings English stand-up and improv at Theater Ida. Saturday: Harlequins kick off at 18:30 Zürich time. Sunday: the IMPACT consultancy and MSF leadership advert reach their published deadlines, while the Männedorf finissage runs 14:00–17:00. For the Vespa-Bar, one useful German phrase is nur bei schönem Wetter: only in fine weather.

Try a blind review of an AI-written assessment

A research & design idea. Give two subject experts the same small set of assessment questions, mixing human and AI drafts without identifying which is which. Ask each to flag ambiguity, identify the decision being tested and explain what a wrong answer would reveal. Compare their disagreements before editing. This turns the review into evidence about the assessment’s usefulness, rather than a vote on how polished it sounds. It also gives you a concrete portfolio example for a capability-design conversation. The Learning Guild · starting point.

Four technicians and one lamp

Today’s puzzle · optimisation. Four technicians must cross a narrow bridge at night. They take 1, 3, 6 and 8 minutes respectively. At most two can cross together, travelling at the slower person’s pace. Every crossing requires the single lamp, which must be carried back whenever someone returns. All start on the same side; nobody may throw the lamp or cross without it. What is the shortest total time to get all four across? Find a route, then try to show why your first plausible answer may not be the best.

18 minutes. Send the 1- and 3-minute technicians together (3); return the 1-minute technician (1); send the 6- and 8-minute technicians together (8); return the 3-minute technician (3); send the 1- and 3-minute technicians together again (3). Total: 3 + 1 + 8 + 3 + 3 = 18. Always using the fastest person to escort each of the other three takes 19 minutes. Checking every legal state transition confirms 18 is the minimum.
