Zürich tonight · a city of open doors

An evening made for discovery

Six art institutions open their doors at Löwenbräukunst tonight. Come for a new exhibition; stay for a performance you had not expected.

From 18:00, Löwenbräukunst's season opening brings together Edition VFO, Hauser & Wirth, Kunsthalle Zürich, Luma Westbau, Migros Museum and Museum Haus Konstruktiv. Admission is free, with exhibitions open until 21:00 and food, drinks and music continuing until 23:00.

For your own route, there is a particularly appealing sequence: new printmaking at Edition VFO, Nicole L'Huillier's one-off sound performance at 18:50, then a choice of Daniel Leveillé's tap-dance performances at 19:30, 20:00 or 20:30. The calendar below separates tonight's fleeting encounters from the exhibitions that will continue into winter.

Zürich · culture, neighbourhoods and a European meeting

Zürich is chosen for a European leaders’ summit

25 September. Switzerland will host the tenth European Political Community summit in Zürich, SRF reports today. It brings the city into the European diplomatic calendar at a moment when security and the Ukraine war dominate discussion. The announcement identifies the host city; it does not yet give residents a usable street-closure or transport plan. Those practical details will matter nearer the meeting. SRF · live reporting.

A new food walk links two very different districts

Announced for 1 October. Zürich Tourism says its food tour enters a new phase on 1 October. The route explores Districts 3 and 4 through samples at six restaurants, connecting the changing neighbourhoods with cheese, chocolate, brewing and the people behind local kitchens. For someone who already lives here, the appeal is the background as much as the tasting: a familiar street can become more interesting when you know what it used to be. The film festival opens with a climb and two Golden Eyes

25 September. Tenzing opened the Zurich Film Festival at the Kongresshaus last night, with Tom Hiddleston, Willem Dafoe and director Jennifer Peedom attending. Luna Wedler received a Golden Eye, as did Hiddleston. OutNow’s opening-night photographs offer a quick look at the occasion; the festival continues through 4 October. The government rejects rent checks and plans a counterproposal

25 September. The Federal Council opposes the initiative seeking regular automatic checks on rents. It instead wants clearer statutory rules, including a statistical comparison rent and indexation, arguing that these would protect tenants while preserving incentives to build. Tenant organisations strongly disagree and say the approach could legitimise excessive rents. A draft is due by mid-2027: today’s decision changes the legislative agenda, not your current rental contract. SRF.

More integration funding, with women and education in focus

25 September. The government has approved a CHF334.5 million commitment for integration measures in 2028–32, equivalent to CHF66.9 million annually. It places particular emphasis on women and routes into employment through education. Language support, cantonal programmes and national projects are part of the package. For your learning-and-capability lens, the interesting question is how the programmes turn participation into access to work and sustained employment. SRF.

Assessment queues expose a wider British support bottleneck

25 September. Nearly a million people in England await ADHD assessments and about 295,000 await autism assessments, according to the Guardian’s analysis. Some NHS boards have imposed minimum two-year waits. The consequences extend beyond clinical care because formal assessments can unlock educational and other support. The report describes changing recognition, referral patterns and limited capacity rather than reducing the problem to a single explanation. The Guardian · analysis.

Three leads · ten world discoveries and perspectives

The US-China summit buys time, with few breakthroughs

25 September. Washington and Beijing extended their trade-war pause until 10 January, but the summit produced little visible progress on AI, Taiwan or Iran. The Guardian’s account distinguishes the elaborate welcome from the more limited substantive results. The extension matters to businesses exposed to trade uncertainty; it is not a comprehensive settlement. The unresolved question is what each side does with the additional time before the next deadline. The Guardian · summit explainer.

Tigray’s renewed fighting now comes with a communications blackout

25 September. Phone and internet disruption has cut residents off from information and mobile-money services. Reuters checked failed connections, and NetBlocks confirmed an outage. Sources disagree over responsibility: several attributed restrictions to the TPLF, while a source close to the group blamed the federal government. After yesterday’s reports of residents stockpiling essentials, the loss of communications is a material deterioration with immediate civilian consequences. The Straits Times / Reuters.

A possible three-way Ukraine meeting moves into view

25 September. Volodymyr Zelensky says the US has proposed technical-level talks with Ukraine and Russia in the UAE. Kyiv is awaiting a date, while the Kremlin says a meeting could happen soon. The proposal follows discussions around the UN General Assembly. It is a prospective negotiating format, not a ceasefire agreement; the fighting continues, including fatal drone strikes on Kyiv reported today. The Straits Times / Reuters.

Richmond warns of a wider property-tax net

25 September. Richmond Council says a reported reduction in the proposed high-value property-tax threshold from £2 million to £1.5 million could bring another 4,300 local homes within scope. The figure is the council’s estimate, and the threshold change is reported as under consideration, not enacted. It is a significant argument for your home town, without implying that you own an affected property. Richmond Nub News.

Sachins earns another reason to celebrate

25 September. Newcastle’s Sachins has received a 2026 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award, placing it among the platform’s top 10% of listings based on customer reviews. The Forth Banks restaurant remains a familiar part of the city’s dining scene. The award is a customer-review distinction rather than an independent global ranking, but the response from owner Bob Arora makes a warm story about staff, regulars and memories around a table. 25 September. Storm-driven waves destroyed a home at Dana Point’s Beach Road and forced restrictions on sixteen others, Reuters reports. Along Southern California, beaches have lost sand as Pacific storms and El Niño combine. Scientists warn that approaching high tides and further ocean effects could worsen conditions this winter. The damage is observed; the scale of what comes next remains a forecast. The Straits Times / Reuters.

Surreal worlds, public sculpture and architecture

Remedios Varo’s strange worlds still cast a spell

25 September. A new Louisiana Channel film brings together three artists and two writers to discuss Varo’s influence. The Spanish-Mexican painter’s exacting, uncanny images sit between machinery, alchemy and living creatures. Colossal’s introduction is a useful doorway into the film: watch how different contributors find their own questions inside the same pictures. This is a chance to discover a visual language rather than simply tick off another exhibition. Colossal.

Ai Weiwei places 500 iron helmets on Sydney’s waterfront

25 September. Mushrooms was unveiled outside the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia today. Five hundred cast-iron combat helmets form ten rows, invoking growth in darkness, nuclear imagery and inadequate responses to crisis. Ai says it is a warning about the fragility of civilisation, rather than a joke. Zumthor gives the Beyeler three distinct kinds of space

25 September. The Fondation Beyeler’s expansion separates exhibitions, events and administration into different buildings. SRF’s architectural visit focuses on the Jura-limestone Wyss Museum, its connection to the landscape and the pavilion’s more open presence. The buildings open in stages from autumn, with full opening in January 2027. Tonight’s openings and the weekend’s laughs

Hear the artwork before it becomes an installation

Tonight, 25 September. Nicole L’Huillier invites visitors into a collective procession and then a live version of Ayayay (Cómo me duele) at 18:50 tonight. Afterwards, the song remains in the exhibition in a subtler form, experienced through proximity to satellite dishes. The one-off performance is free, requires no registration and takes place at Migros Museum. It is exactly the sort of brief encounter that can disappear inside a much longer exhibition listing. Nerdy Comedy now gives a clear Saturday start time

Saturday 26 September. The updated listing consistently says doors at 20:00 and show at 20:30 at ROBIN’s Coffee, Zähringerstrasse 33. Trentodoc opens a conversation about the changing table

25 September. Trento’s sparkling-wine festival runs today through Sunday, accompanied by 125 experiences in producers’ cellars. Climate change connects the programme’s discussions of altitude, earlier harvests and the kinds of food and wine people choose in hotter weather. WineNews follows the relationship between mountain vineyards and acidity, but also asks a more cultural question: whether the way we gather around a table is changing with the climate. A Cape critic makes the case for 2021 Cabernet

25 September. Greg Sherwood’s new column compares the much-debated 2015 and 2017 South African reds before turning to Stellenbosch’s 2021 Cabernet vintage. He describes a cool, later growing season and a tasting organised by the Cabernet Collective. Read it as a critic’s argument, with named estates and wine-by-wine observations, rather than a guarantee about every bottle. It offers a route into producers and ageing styles beyond the usual Bordeaux conversation. Winemag South Africa · opinion.

France’s Atlantique label makes room for lower-alcohol wine

24 September. The Atlantique geographical indication can now include partially de-alcoholised still wines under updated specifications, Vinetur reports. The new category has a 6–9% alcohol range and specific wording on the label, alongside traceability and control requirements. This is a regional-label development, not a claim that all French appellations have changed. For a tasting, it opens an interesting comparison between origin, production technique and what you actually experience in the glass. Vinetur · Spanish.

Enterprise AI, pharma and the craft of capability

Microsoft brings Copilot back towards work

25 September. Microsoft is combining its consumer and workplace Copilot products into a single offering centred on corporate customers, Bloomberg reports. The announced version adds document editing inside Copilot and brings the always-on assistant into the package as Autopilot, with rollout over coming weeks. For your work, the important shift is from generic chatbot familiarity towards competence inside real tasks: checking outputs, assigning responsibility and knowing when a workflow should stop for human review. The Straits Times / Bloomberg.

Novo licenses a route towards less frequent injections

25 September. Novo’s Nanexa agreement covers up to five programmes using a particle-coating platform for long-acting drug delivery. Monthly and quarterly dosing are development targets, not established patient outcomes. The announced value reaches €1.165 billion if conditions are met: the upfront amount is undisclosed and much depends on milestones. The collaboration adds another layer of technical transfer and governance across a pharma development partnership. Fierce Biotech.

Genentech adds another bispecific-antibody partnership

McLaren on the second row · Quins kick off tonight

Piastri takes third as Russell dominates Baku

25 September. Oscar Piastri missed Charles Leclerc’s second place by just one thousandth of a second, qualifying third in 1:43.364. Lando Norris was fifth. George Russell’s 1:42.526 left him 0.837 seconds clear of Leclerc, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli crashed and was classified sixteenth. The result gives McLaren a far more promising position than Thursday’s practice order, but the Mercedes pace remains formidable. Try a demonstration with a deliberate fault

25 September. Learning-design idea: give a colleague a plausible AI-generated work product containing one consequential error. Ask them to identify what they would verify, explain their choice, then make the repair. Compare the process with a flawless example. This is an editorial experiment inspired by today’s Copilot story, not a claim of proven effectiveness. Context · Bloomberg report.

Four numbers, one surprisingly awkward target

Today’s arithmetic puzzle. Use 3, 3, 8 and 8 exactly once each to make 24. You may use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and parentheses. No joining digits, powers, factorials or extra numbers.

There is a neat exact solution, with no rounding. Try for three minutes before looking. If you get stuck, think about division by a number smaller than one.

The Swaddle Daily · The Back PageDesk 12
Puzzle solution — open when ready

24 = 8 ÷ (3 − 8 ÷ 3). Work from the inside: 8/3 is 2⅔; 3 − 2⅔ is ⅓; 8 divided by ⅓ is 24. Each of the four supplied numbers is used once.
