Swiss growth brightens; pharma powers the rebound

A stronger national forecast, a contested banking reform — and what to watch from your seat in Zürich.

The Swiss growth forecast has almost doubled. But the detail matters: volatile pharma activity accounts for much of the second-quarter jump. For a learning and capability leader looking across regulated industries, this is a reason to watch employers closely, not assume a hiring surge.

Elsewhere, the UBS capital debate runs into next week, Britain holds interest rates and the US raises them. Your national and international desks connect the policy news with the industries you know.

ZÜRICH • YOUR HOME CITY

A new city festival will follow the Sihl and Limmat

Announced 15 September. The city has selected Aroma’s “Der Fluss” concept, linking neighbourhoods along the two rivers. Verein Zürcher Volksfeste will develop the detailed plan, expected in the second quarter of 2027. The first festival is envisaged for 2029, with a three-year cycle. Financing and implementation still require further political decisions. This is a newly announced event concept, not something to book this weekend. Read the city’s announcement.

Advertised rents fall, but this is not a change to your own rent

Published 16 September. The Swiss Real Estate Institute’s ReMPA study, commissioned by newhome, reports that advertised rents fell 1.7% nationally between July 2025 and July 2026, with a 3.3% decline in canton Zürich. These are market asking rents across a region; the figures do not establish a change in your neighbourhood, apartment or existing lease. Why it may matter: useful context if you are comparing accommodation or considering a move. Read the study announcement.

Swiss growth brightens; pharma powers the rebound

17 September · Economy. SECO has lifted its 2026 growth forecast from 0.9% to 1.7%. Yet almost half of the unusually strong second-quarter expansion came from volatile chemical and pharmaceutical activity. A correction is expected in the second half. This is an improved forecast, rather than evidence of a hiring boom.

For your search across pharma and capability leadership, the useful signal is stronger activity coupled with uncertainty. Employers' actual vacancies and investment plans remain more informative than a headline GDP number. SECO · Full forecast.

Workers’ AI learning is running ahead of employer training

It combines recruitment-market information with research on AI skills and learning. This is a vendor-published US report, so its findings should not automatically be generalized to Switzerland. Research desk: redesign the workflow as well as the training

Published 10 September · Catch-up. Trinity College Dublin reports that an Irish study found AI’s clearest effects in changing tasks and workflows. Workers increasingly need to review, verify and coordinate AI outputs. Its survey also found a gap between confidence and formal training. This describes the study’s setting, not a guarantee about future job displacement. An idea to use: for an AI learning programme, define which decisions people must retain and practise, then assess the quality of those decisions. That application is this newspaper’s editorial interpretation. Read Trinity’s research summary.

McLaren: Norris takes third after Madrid strategy frustration

Race 13 September · Catch-up. Lando Norris finished third and Oscar Piastri eighth at the Spanish Grand Prix. McLaren attributes Norris' lost opportunity chiefly to the timing of a Virtual Safety Car: rivals could stop immediately, while he had already passed the pit entry. Piastri's race was compromised by first-lap front-wing damage. The explanation is the team's assessment, while the finishing positions are confirmed in its report. Read McLaren's race report.

Three evenings, three wines

Original logic puzzle. Alex, Bea and Chris attend one tasting each, on different days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The wines are Rioja, Riesling and Champagne, each tasted once.

  1. Bea attends on Saturday.
  2. Champagne is tasted on Sunday.
  3. Alex does not taste Rioja.
  4. Bea does not taste Rioja.

Who tastes what, and when? The answer is at the foot of the paper.
